Jimmy Charles Betts

Jimmy Charles Betts, was born June 27, 1948 in Fairfield, Texas, to Charlie Betts and Jennie Banks. As the first born son, he protected and cared for his younger brother, Donald Betts.

At an early age, he and his family moved to Dallas, Texas and as a diligent scholar he matriculated through St. Anthony Catholic School. Upon completing secondary schooling, Jimmy attended the University of Dallas and was later drafted into the military where he served as a Field Medic (June 1969-1971) during the Vietnam War. With the Lord as his fortress, he earned several military awards that included: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service – (2) Bronze Stars, Combat Medic’s Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal just to name a few. After proudly fulfilling his duty to his country, he labored as an impressionable postal carrier for nearly 40 years.

Led by the Holy Spirit, Jimmy and Helen Denise Smith were united in holy matrimony December 11, 1971 and joined New Friendship Missionary Baptist Church under the pastoral guidance of Rev. G. T. Thomas. Dedicated, convicted and excited to proclaim his love for Christ, Jimmy served in many capacities such as an Usher, Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent, Trustee, and Deacon. He continued his learning and sharing the knowledge of God in the Baptist Training Union (B.T.U.), prayer services, and brotherhood meetings always making a “joyful noise unto the Lord”.

He leaves to cherish his memories of love, his devoted wife of 51 years, Helen; five children: Ursula (Antony), Pia, Devren (Andrea), Jarrell (Creshaun), and Maya (Cassell); twelve beautiful grandchildren: Anya, Denise, Lauren, Aria, Joshua, Meagan, Emerson, Cassell Jr. (CJ), Tara, Zara, Sterling, Cairo and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
