D-FW health care providers under federal investigation for illegal drug distribution

A Celina physician and eight others have been indicted, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.

A group including North Texas health care providers has been indicted on charges of federal drug distribution violations, U.S. Attorney Damien M. Diggs announced Thursday.

Dr. Kevin Shelton, 53, of Celina, was charged by a grand jury with conspiracy to possess with intent to manufacture and distribute controlled substances, as well as conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Eight other individuals were also named in the indictment: Stephanie Shelton, 48, of Celina; Jai Ellis, 41, of Celina; Clay York, 50, of Rowlett; Stephanie York, 49, of Rowlett; Jeffrey Cornwell, 47, of McKinney; Raman Bhaumik, 45, of Plano; Prasenjit Bhaumik, 48, of Plano; and David Pokorny, 62, of Sherman.

Those charged allegedly conspired to possess controlled substances with the intent to distribute, including hydrocodone, Adderall and testosterone, according to the indictment.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration confirmed that compounding pharmacy Texas Star Pharmacy is part of the ongoing investigation. Compounding pharmacies sell custom-made medications to meet the needs of individual patients.

The case is being investigated by the DEA and the Internal Revenue Service and prosecuted by assistant U.S. attorneys in Plano and Sherman.

If convicted, the defendants each face up to 20 years in federal prison.
