Big Mama Said: “There’s Light at the End of the Tunnel”

By : Terry Allen

Yesterday, I experienced something that stopped me in my tracks. After accompanying my mother to a five-hour chemo treatment—her fourth courageous battle with cancer—we prepared to leave. But as we walked out, the oncology staff did something unforgettable: they formed a “Spirit Tunnel” just like the segment on The Jennifer Hudson Show. They lined the hall, clapped, and cheered me on.

Not because I was the patient. But because I kept showing up. Day after day, I brought snacks for the staff, children’s books for their kids, and encouraging words for anyone who needed them. I didn’t think much of it—I just did what I was raised to do. But in that moment, I realized my light had been noticed. Big Mama always said, “If you’ve got light, don’t hide it under no bushel—shine it so folks can find their way.

And just like that, her words came alive.Lucille “Big Mama” Allen was a Southern matriarch who raised generations on grit, God, and grace. Her wisdom lit up every room, and her faith carried us through dark days. She taught us that love is loudest when it shows up.

I’ve also seen that same spirit in Norma Wade Adams, a founder of NABJ and a personal beacon in my life. Norma didn’t just open doors—she held them open and clapped as I walked through. She’s been that woman in my tunnel, cheering me on without fail. So much so, I created the Norma Wade Adams Purse Auction in her honor—to continue giving gifts that help others walk in her light.

It reminds me of when Kendrick Lamar surprised a humble school janitor in Compton by showing up at an award ceremony to thank him for his years of service. That janitor didn’t realize his quiet work had inspired so many. Kendrick showed up to cheer up a man who thought no one was watching.

This week, be somebody’s Spirit Tunnel. Applaud the caregiver, uplift the quiet worker, check in on the one who always checks on others. Shine your light. Walk in Norma’s legacy. And never forget—there is light at the end of the tunnel… especially when you bring it.
