Community leaders and advocates gathered Thursday evening at the Women’s Leadership Summit’s special reception to celebrate the service and leadership of two Dallas trailblazers: former Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Carolyn King Arnold and newly elected District 8 Councilmember Lorie Blair. Hosted by the Women’s Leadership Summit, the event highlighted the ongoing work of Black women in government and community building, past, present, and future.

The reception brought together a powerful room of Black women leaders, all focused on encouraging the next generation to step into roles of influence. Dr. Sharon Blackman, a longtime educator and member of the Women’s Leadership Summit Advisory Committee, spoke to the heart of the summit’s mission:
“The Women’s Leadership Summit is about women who’ve lived, led, and now pass the baton. It’s about recognizing those who’ve broken barriers… If you have knowledge, share knowledge.”
District 8 Councilmember Lorie Blair, honored for her trailblazing win and service in Southeast Dallas, reflected on the unity in the room:
“It’s wonderful to see this many Black women leaders, politicians, elected officials coming together and lifting each other up. People like to say we don’t do that. But this right here is proof that we do.”

Former Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Carolyn King Arnold shared how deeply moved she was by the turnout, calling it a humbling reminder of community support:
“People don’t have to show up even when you invite them. The fact that they chose to be here is incredibly humbling. My advocacy didn’t stop when I left office. It just put me in a different position to keep the fight going and pass that energy forward.”
The Women’s Leadership Summit will continue this vital work with its upcoming event in September, bringing together Black women leaders, advocates, and community members to build on the momentum of empowerment and leadership. As these trailblazers have shown, the future is bright when women support each other and rise together.
