For the first time since March 11, 2020, the Dallas Mavericks played before their hometown crowd on February 8th.
Fans were allowed into the American Airlines Center for the first time this season and they were treated to a show as the Mavs defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 127-122. In addition, the Mavs Maaniacs performed, fans enjoyed discounted merchandise and were also given free t-shirts.
“It’s great to honor these folks that have been courageous and have been doing such important work on the frontlines for so many months,” said Mavs Head Coach Rick Carlisle. “It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 11 months since the hiatus and so much has happened. But these folks have had a non-stop job between then and now.
“We’re very grateful. We’re very appreciative to have them as part of the game tonight,” Carlisle continued. “It’s 1,500 people in a 19,200-seat arena, that means they were pretty well socially distanced which is good. It helps bring back a little bit of normalcy which is greatly needed.”
Attending the game were vaccinated essential workers, including medical professionals, police and firefighters, food services and others. They also have the opportunity to attend other upcoming Mavs homes games on Feb. 10th and 14th.
All the fans had to adhere to protocols laid out by the Dallas Mavericks and in compliance with the Center for Disease Control, Dallas County Health and Human Services and the NBA, including having received at least one round of the COVID-19 vaccine; showing their CDC COVID-19 Vaccination Record prior to entering the AAC and wearing proper face masks and social distancing.
