DeSoto Independent School District announced Julius Hemphill II as the 2021 District Spelling Bee champion.
Hemphill, a sixth-grade student at Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy, competed against ten spellers during the online event, which took place from January 19-21. Hemphill advanced to the county competition, where he will compete against spellers from surrounding districts.
COVID-19 has prevented spelling bees from happening in person, but The Scripps National Spelling Bee created an online platform for local competitions so students would be able to participate at home or at school in a virtual environment.
Tavaren Robinson, a student at West Middle School, was the runner-up of the district competition.
