WSSU quarterback named CIAA scholar of the year

Daylin Lee of WSSU football named CIAA Male Scholar Athlete of the Year with 3.93 GPA, impressive on field and in community.

RICHMOND, Va. – Daylin Lee from the Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) football team was named the CIAA Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.

Lee, a freshman from Shelby, North Carolina, was a standout on the field and in the classroom. As a pre-computer science major, Daylin has a 3.93 grade point average. Lee also recorded 1,845 total yards, with 18 touchdowns, and five rushing touchdowns on the season leading him to be named to the All-CIAA Second Team. In the community, Lee volunteered at the YMCA turkey trot, volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity store, participated in trash pick-ups, volunteered at Cook and various elementary schools, and goes back to Shelby to assist in cleaning his high school. This past spring he participated in the DII Apple Training Institute in Florida.

“Thank you to Ms. Airis for nominating me for this special award,” said Lee. “Thank you to my parents and family for instilling this work ethic and this standard of greatness that I’m continuously chasing. Thank you to the coaches, Athletic department, faculty, and staff for pushing me to excel both in the classroom and on the field.”

Lee is the second straight WSSU athlete to win the CIAA’s top award. Last year offensive lineman Darrick McLean was the CIAA Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Other winners included Anii Harris (Bowie State) was named the Female Scholar of the Year, Tony O’Neal (Claflin) was named the Athletic Director of the Year, Lawanda Miller (Fayetteville State), Matisse Lee (Claflin), who was named Senior Woman Administrator of the Year and Dr. Jolisa Williams (Bowie State) was named the Sports Information Director of the Year. Korey Nickson of WSSU won the CIAA’s Eric Moore Communications & Marketing post graduate scholarship.
