DeSoto ISD will host the swearing-in ceremony for former teacher and Texas State Board of Education Trustee Aicha Davis, 2:30 pm, Friday, January 20, 2023, at DeSoto High School, 600 Eagle Drive in the campus’ courtroom.
Davis was elected to the Texas State Board of Education, representing Dallas and Tarrant Counties, in November 2018.
She previously served as a secondary science and engineering teacher in Baton Rouge and Dallas/Fort Worth, beginning her teaching career to serve students affected by Hurricane Katrina.
During her first term, she successfully led the statewide adoption of African American Studies, created a paid internship for underrepresented college students with the Texas Permanent School Fund, championed efforts for the Crown Act with the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, and was elected Vice Chair of the Committee on School Initiatives.
Davis also led workshops on best practices for effective advocacy through the Texas Education Policy Institute and worked with Congressional Members and federal offices on strategies to increase equity and opportunities for students of African descent.
She serves as the Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with Dallas College and previously led Advocacy Communities of Practice for the entire Texas A&M System.
Davis is currently completing her dissertation in Education Leadership and Policy at the University of North Texas.
