AARP and NNPA Media Roundtable: Attitudes & Concerns Among Black Women 50+ Voters and Why They Will Help Decide the 2022 Elections

NNPA NEWSWIRE — The AARP national survey was conducted by phone and online from February 18 to March 3, 2022 using NORC’s Foresight 50+ Panel, supplemented with interviews from non-probability panels. The final poll included 1,836 voters age 50 and over who are likely to vote in 2022, with samples of Black voters, Hispanic/Latino voters, Asian American/Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander voters as well as American Indian/Alaska Native voters.

The poll findings show that candidates should not take these voters for granted – most haven’t decided which candidates to support yet, and their votes will likely decide the balance of power in Congress.

Exclusive preview for attendees at new research examining the priorities and worries of older Black women— a critical voting demographic— ahead of the midterm elections

WHAT: AARP and the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) will highlight new findings from a nationwide poll and focus group that explore the priorities and concerns of a key group of voters that are likely to help determine the 2022 midterms: Black women age 50 and over. The research highlights how older Black women plan to vote in November as well as what they view as the country’s top issues, including inflation, the economy, and the increasingly polarized political environment.

The pandemic has accelerated an economic crisis that has disproportionately impacted older women, and their concerns could shape the election, as this voter group has had one of the highest turnout rates for decades, especially Black women. The poll findings show that candidates should not take these voters for granted – most haven’t decided which candidates to support yet, and their votes will likely decide the balance of power in Congress.

METHODOLOGY:

The AARP national survey was conducted by phone and online from February 18 to March 3, 2022 using NORC’s Foresight 50+ Panel, supplemented with interviews from non-probability panels. The final poll included 1,836 voters age 50 and over who are likely to vote in 2022, with samples of Black voters, Hispanic/Latino voters, Asian American/Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander voters as well as American Indian/Alaska Native voters. The survey results represent a sample of 984 women voters age 50 and over with 171 Black women. Study margin of error: +/- 3.29%.

The focus group was conducted May 24, 2022, by a bipartisan team of pollsters: GBAO, Echelon Insights, Lake Research Partners, and Bellwether Research. The group included nine participants, all Black women age 50 and over. Qualitative research findings are directional and not projectable onto the population at large.
