WHAT: For the first time since the pandemic, the North Texas Summer & Supper Council
will host an in-person Summer Meals Kickoff event for more than 150 children.
Presented by Mr. Cooper and Vistra Group, the event will combat summer hunger by reminding North Texas families of the availability of free summer meals. The effort is designed to ensure students who rely on free or reduced-price meal programs during the school year continue to get daily, nutritious food during summer months.
More than 150 volunteers from Mr. Cooper, Vistra Energy, and United Way of Metropolitan Dallas will pass out meals, raise awareness, and support the efforts of partner entities who serve approximately 60,000 children annually.
Volunteers will also organize water activities, field games, music, arts and crafts to stress the importance of maintaining a healthy body and brain to students.
The North Texas Summer & Supper Council is a partnership launched by United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and Baylor University Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty.
WHY: In a typical summer, the North Texas Summer and Supper Council works with more than two dozen partners to serve more than two million meals to more than 60,000 children. Since the pandemic, the need has grown. Last summer, 12 million+ meals were served in Dallas and Collin counties.
The North Texas Food Bank estimates that one in five kids in our region are food insecure. Research shows that events like this can increase summer meal participation, alerting families that community sites are open and offer a fun and easy way to get a nutritious meal.
