Sprouts Farmers Market has made a zoning request with the city of Dallas to build a store in Oak Cliff, just south of Interstate 30.
The proposed location is on the northeast corner of North Hampton Road and Fort Worth Avenue. Crown Buffet Chinese Restaurant and an Elrod’s Cost Plus market now occupy the corner.
Sprouts hasn’t responded to a request for more information.
It’s been a while since a new grocery store was built in Oak Cliff.
Neighborhoods south of I-30 have long complained that they don’t have the selection of grocery stores available in other sections of the city. H-E-B’s Central Market purchased land near the Bishop Arts District in 2017. Earlier this year the grocery division’s president Stephen Butt said a store there is “very much on the drawing board,” and the company is looking for the right developer partner. That property is on the northeast corner of West Davis Street and North Beckley Avenue.
Dallas-based Berkley’s Market is opening soon at 634 W. Davis St. in space that had been the Bolsa Mercado restaurant.
Sprouts has 49 stores in Texas, including 23 in Dallas-Fort Worth. Two more under construction in Las Colinas and Grand Prairie are scheduled to open this year. Sprouts opened its first store in Texas in Plano in 2005, and it was one of the first new states for the grocery chain based in Arizona.
Sprouts Farmers Market also plans to open next year in space that was vacated by Stein Mart in Hillside Village in East Dallas, according to documents filed with the state.
The retailer has had an aggressive schedule, with 20 stores opening in 2021.
