AUSTIN – When lawmakers return to Austin in January 2027 there will be a new caucus for consideration.

In line with the GOP’s proposition 10, which passed last week during the primaries, the question queried if Texas should prohibit Sharia law in the state.

There were 95% of the voters who said yes and some lawmakers believe this is the overall tone and a real concern among Republican voters.

Already 28 lawmakers have joined the caucus, all Republicans including State Rep. Brent Money (R-Greenville) who said in a press release that the caucus was formed to counter the alarming rise of Sharia law in the United States.

The press release stated “Sharia is not compatible with the United States or Texas Constitutions.

Money revealed the new Sharia Free Texas Caucus on March and said it will “develop legislative proposals aimed at preventing the influence of Islamic law in the state.”

He went on to say, “I think that one of the biggest issues facing Texas right now is the Islamization of Texas.”

His concern is that Sharia law is taking hold throughout the world and is a result of the out-of-control immigration issues resulting in Islamic communities that have no interest in taking part in American culture.

According to Texas Policy Research the public statements from caucus supporters have several policy goals in mind.

“These include examining potential conflicts between Sharia law and constitutional rights, investigating organizations that lawmakers believe may have connections to foreign political movements, reinforcing what they describe as the ‘Biblical foundations of Western liberty,’ and strengthening enforcement of immigration laws and public benefit eligibility.

The framing of these objectives highlights two overlapping themes. The first is a national security perspective focused on foreign influence and potential extremist networks. The second is a cultural perspective focused on the perceived compatibility of Islamic legal traditions with American constitutional values.

These concerns are not new. Similar debates have occurred periodically in American politics for more than a decade. Several states have attempted to enact legislation prohibiting courts from applying Sharia law or foreign law more broadly. Many of those efforts have encountered legal challenges or have been revised to address constitutional concerns.

The Texas caucus is therefore entering an area of policymaking where legal precedent and constitutional interpretation play a significant role.”

The creation of the Sharia Free Texas Caucus in the Texas House of Representatives makes clear the Sharia law and foreign legal influence debate will be a headline in the 2027 legislative session as well as being a critical issue moving forward regarding policymaking in Texas.

Money said “Texas has always been a beacon of freedom, forged it the fires of independence and rooted in unyielding Christian values. We will not stand by idle as Islamic influences seek to transform our great state into another conquered territory. The caucus will fight until our last breath to ensure Texas will remain sovereign, Christian, and free.”

The Sharia Free Texas Caucus was inspired by the Sharia Free American Caucus co-chaired by Congressman Keith Self and Congressman Chip Roy, which now has 46 members from 22 different states. “I think the membership is going to grow quickly and hopefully will eventually be a majority of the Texas House,” Money concluded.
