The State Fair Classic – Prairie View A & M University vs. Grambling State University – it’s more than a football game, as thousands gathered in Dallas, Texas, for the Classic’s centennial.
The month of September brings about the transition between the Summer and the Winter seasons.
The State Fair of Texas and college football in the Dallas Metroplex is an important element for the entire region.
The State Fair of Texas has been a staple for the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metropolitan area for 100 years. The State Fair Football Classic featuring the Panthers of Prairie View vs the Tigers of Grambling always bring a different brand to the table.
It’s more than a football game when people get together. Many reunions are reestablished with this event because it brings about the gathering of old acquaintances with story telling that changes every year. The day started out with walking down Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd and crossing Malcolm X Way to reach the Cotton Bowl. Both are appropriately placed in Dallas, Tx. The events that led us to MLK Blvd: It is the home to one Sorority House (Delta Sigma Theta) along with two Fraternity Houses (Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi). The men of Alpha Phi Alpha joined in on the festivities for the pre and post game activities.
There was food, fun, vendors and conversation. Several HBCUs were represented. From there, we made our way to the Cotton Bowl down Dr. MLK Boulevard straight to the Fairgrounds, and straight to the Cotton Bowl through the Midway, where an exciting game was played. Prairie View won on the gridiron by the score 28 -13 totally dominating Grambling.
However, when you go to an HBCU game, the other focus is: “Who won the halftime show?” Traditionally, your fan base wants two victories. One on the field and the other at Halftime.
This year’s winner was Prairie View on the gridiron, and Grambling at Halftime. What a day for HBCUS and a day of EXCELLENCE at its BEST!
