Ernest James Weaver was born on December 2, 1955, in Dallas, Texas, to his loving parents, Willie Marie Weaver and Howard Weaver.
Preceded in Death
Ernest James Weaver was preceded in death by his mother, Willie Marie Weaver; his father, Howard Weaver; his sister, Patricia Steele; his brothers, Robert Weaver and Paul Blair; and his son, Ernest James Blanco.
Ernest lived a life defined by family, faith, friendship, sports, and a genuine love for people. He had a personality that could light up a room, and he made those around him feel welcome and cared for.
Ernest accepted Christ at an early age and carried his faith throughout his life. He attended Dallas Public Schools and developed a lifelong love for sports, especially basketball. He also enjoyed music, singing, dancing, and spending time with family and friends.
His Love of Basketball
Basketball was a major part of Ernest’s life. He was the owner and founder of the Dallas Fast Break Pro-Am Basketball Team, which became a source of pride, friendship, and fellowship.
He enjoyed traveling with his team to places such as Oklahoma and Louisiana and participating in tournaments including the Po Bill Classic and the Dallas FedEx Basketball Tournaments. Through Dallas Fast Break, Ernest formed lasting friendships and shared his passion for the game with generations of players.
Among those connected to the early Dallas Fast Break years were Micah Reed, Dennis Malone, Maurice Bullock, Zoderick Green, Michael Harris, and Archie McNeal.
A Heart for Children
Ernest had a special place in his heart for children. He coached youth football with the Mesquite Cowboys and the Dallas County Soldiers, where he found purpose in encouraging young athletes and helping them grow.
For Ernest, coaching was about more than sports. He wanted children to know that someone believed in them. He taught them the importance of discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and carrying themselves with pride. His hope was always to leave a positive mark on their lives, both on and off the field.
The Man His Family Will Remember
Family was at the center of Ernest’s world. He loved hosting gatherings, BBQing for his family, and of course, his favorite—fried chicken! He loved playing music, singing, and dancing. He had a wonderful sense of humor and could turn an ordinary moment into one filled with laughter.
He also had a generous spirit. Ernest would not let anyone around him go hungry. There was always room at his table and something to eat for anyone who came through his door.
His family will treasure the sound of his music, his singing, his dancing, his jokes, and the warmth he brought to every gathering. These everyday moments are among the greatest gifts he left behind.
Family
Ernest was affectionately known as “Bone” to those who knew and loved him. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
He leaves to cherish his memories his beloved wife of 50 years, Darlene Weaver, and his children, Rashun Woods of Rockwall, Texas; James Woods and Tyeisha Woods of Fate, Texas; and Vincent Woods of Rockwall, Texas.
He also leaves eight grandchildren: Mike Blanco, Kadion Johnson, Zya Stephen’s, Antwone Woods, Theodore Blanco, Er’Nija Blanco, Kayla Woods, and James Woods Jr.
He is also survived by his sister, Zelia Wilson of Dallas, Texas; Richard Weaver and Dale Weaver of Dallas, Texas; Manuel Weaver of Dallas, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
Friends Who Became Family
Ernest was blessed with friendships that lasted through many seasons of his life. Among his close friends were Wendell Johnson, Gary Dotson, and Bill Patterson.
He also leaves his childhood friends John B. Carr and Lester Williams, along with many others who shared his journey and will carry his memory in their hearts.
Forever in Our Hearts
Ernest’s legacy can be found in the people he loved, the young lives he encouraged, the players he inspired, and the family and friends who gathered around him.
He leaves behind more than accomplishments. He leaves behind stories, laughter, lessons, and a lifetime of shared moments that will continue to be remembered.
His family will carry forward the traditions he loved—the music, the food, the dancing, the fellowship, and the joy of being together.
Though he is no longer here in person, the love he gave and the difference he made will remain a part of everyone fortunate enough to have known him.
