Mathew Knowles has spent much of his career building a legacy in music. As the founder of Music World Entertainment and the executive powering the engine behind the girl group Destiny’s Child, he helped shape the careers of some of the industry’s most recognizable artists, including his daughters Beyoncé and Solange Knowles. But in 2019, he faced a challenge that had little to do with the music business: a breast cancer diagnosis that would change his life and bring renewed attention to a disease often associated exclusively with women.

Knowles publicly shared his diagnosis that year, helping spark important conversations about male breast cancer and the importance of early detection. His experience also offered a reminder that breast cancer does not discriminate by gender, even though the disease is far less common in men.

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 0.5 to 1 percent of breast cancer cases occur in men. For Knowles, recognizing that something was wrong proved critical. Today, the breast cancer survivor continues to use his experience to encourage greater awareness of the disease.

On October 16, Knowles was the guest of honor at the inaugural Pearl’s Pink Promise Gala, hosted by Houston-based therapist and television personality Ashley LaRue at the Omni Hotel in Houston, Texas. The evening brought together survivors, advocates, community leaders and supporters for a celebration rooted in remembrance, resilience and the importance of breast cancer awareness.

The gala was born out of LaRue’s desire to honor her grandmother, Pearline, who died from breast cancer in 2025. Through the event, LaRue sought to honor her grandmother’s life while raising funds to support breast cancer awareness, education and resources for individuals and families affected by the disease.

Throughout the evening, 15 honorees were recognized for their strength, perseverance and courage, each representing the many ways breast cancer touches individuals and families.

One of the evening’s most personal moments came during a 30-minute fireside chat between LaRue and Knowles, who reflected on the moment he first suspected something was wrong. He recalled noticing blood on his shirt, a troubling sign that prompted him to seek medical attention and request further testing.

Knowles also discussed the emotional weight of sharing his diagnosis with his family, including the reassurance he offered his loved ones that he would prioritize his health and face the disease head-on.

The conversation extended beyond the stage, with audience members invited to ask questions. The exchange created space for vulnerability and reflection, moving several attendees to tears while underscoring the importance of speaking openly about breast cancer, recognizing potential warning signs and seeking medical attention when something feels wrong.

“This experience has made me so proud, and my heart is filled with joy,” LaRue said.

Through Pearl’s Pink Promise, LaRue hopes to expand the initiative with future events and experiences designed for both men and women, creating spaces where people can share their experiences, access resources and learn how to advocate for their health.
