Rev. Dr. Frederick Douglass Haynes III tells Roland Martin that Black people and perceived Black progress have been turned into a political “boogeyman.”

Haynes is expected to win a congressional race in November to represent the district now held by Jasmine Crockett near Dallas.

Haynes argued that attacks on DEI and “woke” politics draw attention away from corruption, the enrichment of wealthy interests, and the dismantling of democratic protections built through the Civil Rights Movement.

“They have used Black people and perceived black progress as the boogieman,” Haynes said. “We have not witnesses this kind of corruption, this kind of blatant corruption.”

Haynes pointed to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968 as part of the infrastructure he believes is being demolished. He criticized President Donald Trump and Republicans over corruption and power, invokes the “billionaire Epstein class,” and describes voting-access concerns in Texas.

“Nixon is a choirboy compared to what he have right now,” Haynes said.

Haynes also cites 1 million registered Black voters and 2 million unregistered Black voters in Texas, figures he presents while discussing the possibility of changing the state’s political landscape.

“Folk have lost their minds as America has become more colorful and flavorful,” Haynes said. “There is some craziness that is going on right now politically, but at the same time we have to be even bolder when it comes to being an opposition party.”

Haynes also highlights the racism he says he witnessed during closing arguments in the Carmelo Anthony case, young people’s fears about their safety, and the importance of down-ballot elections. Asked how he would hold elected officials accountable, including Democrats, Haynes says he has refused corporate PAC money and pledges to stay in direct conversation with the communities he would represent.

Roland also calls out the Congressional Black Caucus Political Action Committee for, he says, spending no advertising dollars on his show.
