WASHINGTON D.C. – Amid the current storm of conversation surrounding Representative Ilhan Omar, it was actually the Biden administration that originally opened the federal investigation into the Minnesota lawmaker.
While that finding is factually accurate, the reality reveals a much larger story involving two distinct federal tracks. The investigation the Biden administration originally opened in June 2024 focused primarily on separate ethics and financial allegations not related to her immigration history. However, elements of those initial financial questions have since been re-examined alongside a completely distinct immigration fraud probe.
As The Western Journal noted in a recent piece, “Omar Corruption Concerns Are Bipartisan – The Biden Admin Investigated Her First,” the public conversation has frequently framed the current federal inquiry into her immigration timeline as a targeted, partisan hit-job. In reality, the newer probe functions almost like an addendum. While not widely discussed at the time, The New York Times previously reported that Biden’s Justice Department Public Integrity Unit was already investigating Omar’s personal finances, campaign spending, and interactions with an unidentified foreign citizen.
The newest track belongs to an immigration fraud case. When Omar’s Washington, D.C. home was raided, the execution of the warrant was entirely related to immigration paperwork rather than her financial disclosures. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) executed the court-authorized warrant, noting they are reviewing 43 specific cases tied to sponsored individuals whose identities could not be confirmed. Concurrently, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced her office is examining separate disclosure statements filed by Omar to Congress regarding her personal household assets. Additionally, a grand jury indictment is actively being pursued out of Minnesota, with prominent figures like Pam Bondi taking a public role.
For her part, Omar has fiercely denied allegations of both immigration and financial wrongdoing. She and her staff characterized the raid as a “racist, creepy” political ploy and an explicit attempt to weaponize law enforcement against prominent progressive critics of the White House. Regarding the original financial probe, Omar blamed a clerical accounting error for a sudden jump in her reported asset value from thousands to millions, subsequently amending her financial disclosure forms to show the businesses held zero net value after accounting for liabilities.
While the Biden-era financial investigation ultimately stalled due to a lack of immediate evidence, this recent immigration investigation is actively moving forward. Justice Department spokesperson Emily Covington recently pushed back against claims of political targeting, and federal authorities have emphasized that a federal magistrate judge signed off on the physical search warrant. Under federal law, executing such a search requires a showing of specific probable cause backed by factual evidence, indicating the probe has moved past simple political rhetoric into a formal, evidence-gathering criminal process. So while critics might call this latest raid a partisan attack, the reality is that Omar has been caught in a bipartisan legal crossfire for years and this new track is just the beginning.
