The Texas School Public Relations Association (TSPRA) recently awarded WFAA-TV reporter Demond Fernandez with the 2021 Media Award.
The association honored Fernandez for “his outstanding contributions to public education in Texas through effective and consistent communications practices ” during its 59th annual conference on Feb. 23 hosted in Denton.
Fernandez was one of seven TSPRA members who received a 2021 Professional Award for their work in and support of public education. He is an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists.
Fernandez’s “reporting allows the community to remain up to date on critical issues impacting their community and schools,” reads TSPRA’s website. “In a world that is oversaturated with misinformation, Fernandez is passionate about reporting the facts, telling a great story, and being a source of information for the DFW community.”
The TSPRA is a statewide chapter of the National School Public Relations Association which professional development, resources and networking opportunities for our members and others in the education community.
Additional honorees included Art Del Barrio, Pasadena ISD (Professional Achievement Award); Justin Elbert, Klein ISD (Most Valuable Member); Shelby Akin, Pleasant Grove ISD (Rookie Of The Year:); Charlotte LaGrone and John Tarrant, Weatherford ISD (Bright Idea Award); and Ally Surface, Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD Education Foundation (Partner in Public Education Award).
