Mississippi Valley State took the field against Jackson State today with heavy hearts after the loss of one of their own.

Junior linebacker Ryan Quinney was killed in a car crash in Yazoo City, Mississippi, on Friday night. Quinney was 20 years old. No other details were available at the time of publication.

“We are heartbroken to share that our beloved student, Ryan Quinney, tragically lost his life in a car accident last night,” the university announced on its Facebook page Saturday. “Ryan was a bright light in our community with a spirit that lifted everyone around him. He will be deeply missed by his friends, faculty, and all who knew him.”

Quinney, a transfer from Lane College, played in 15 games across the 2023 and 2024 seasons for the Delta Devils, recording 73 tackles, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Quinney last played on Oct. 12 against Alabama State.

Before Saturday’s game, Mississippi Valley State captains were joined by Jackson State captains at midfield to honor Quinney’s memory.
