The third edition of the HBCU All-Star Game once again brought together a collection of some of the best Black College basketball players on a national stage.

In the showcase of top-end HBCU talent, Team Wallace overcame a double-digit deficit to defeat Team Mahorn 108-97 in front of a sell-out crowd of 7,211. Team Wallace turned up the screws defensively in the second half limiting Team Mahorn to 41 points in the second half.

Jones thought his team’s effort on the defensive side was the decisive factor in Sunday’s game.

“Real excited for these young men. I thought both teams played extremely hard,” Jones said. “I thought it was a great show for the fans. I thought our guys did a much better job of sharing the basketball in the second half and locking in on the defensive end.”

Team Wallace, a tribute to Virginia Union great and Hall of Fame Player Ben Wallace, was coached by NC Central’s LaVelle Moton and Clark Atlanta’s Alfred Jordan. The group was comprised of players from the SIAC, MEAC Tennessee State and Hampton.

Team Mahorn, an homage to Hampton legend and NBA champion Rick Mahorn, pulled its stars from the SWAC and CIAA. The team was led by Texas Southern coach Johnny Jones and assistant Lincoln coach Jason Armstrong.

Team Wallace had six players in double figures, led by Bethune-Cookman’s Dhashon Dyson, who took home the game’s MVP, scoring 19 points and knocking down five three-pointers. Jaylen Alston put in 16 points, and Jeremiah Kendall added 14.
