A Dallas jury found Larry Jenkins guilty of capital murder Friday in the shooting death of former NBA and Big 3 player Andre Emmett outside his Dallas home.
Jenkins had pleaded not guilty of robbing and killing Emmett in the September 2019 incident. Two other defendants, Michael Lucky and Keith Johnson, also are charged with capital murder in connection with Emmett’s death. They have yet to stand trial.
Jury selection for Jenkins got underway Monday.
His trial began Tuesday with testimony from police officers, crime scene investigators and Emmett’s mother, Regina Oliver.
Emmett was robbed and shot September 23, 2019, outside his home in Old East Dallas. He died later at a local hospital. The shooting was captured by a Ring camera system on his front door.
Police testified Emmett’s watch and a necklace were stolen during the robbery.
Emmett, who was 37, grew up in Oak Cliff and attended David W. Carter High School. He excelled in basketball and won a scholarship to Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
Emmett is the all-time leading scorer in Texas Tech men’s basketball history. He played professionally in the NBA and overseas and was a rising star in Ice Cube’s Big 3 league before he was killed.
Last month, while on a stop in Dallas, Big 3 officials retired his jersey during a special ceremony featuring his mom and two daughters, Kennedy and Zara.
