The Daniel “Chappie” James Arena was packed with potential and purpose as hundreds of Tuskegee University students gathered for the 2026 Annual Career Fair, hosted by the university’s Career and Leadership Development Center.
More than 60 employers sent recruiters, including Airbus, Johnson & Johnson, Nucor, Honeywell Technologies, Lockheed Martin and Teach For America, creating opportunities for students to explore internships, careers and professional development while engaging directly with recruiters from leading organizations.
The Career and Leadership Development Center serves as a vital bridge between the classroom and the professional world, preparing students to enter global workspaces with confidence and competence.
“We are focused on ensuring that our students are career-ready, confident and prepared to lead in an increasingly competitive global workforce. This event is a valuable skill-building experience for them,” said Walter Cooper Sr., director of the Center.
The event offered an opportunity to sharpen networking and interview skills while exploring potential career paths.
Edgar Hubbert, a freshman computer science major from Montgomery, Alabama, said he was eager to put those skills into practice.
“I am sure it will help me when I am applying for internships,” Hubbert said. A member of the ROTC Space Force program, Hubbert hopes to build a career in cybersecurity and viewed the event as an important step toward that goal.
Looking across the crowded arena floor, Cooper emphasized that the experience benefits employers as much as students.
“These recruiters are also learning about the excellence being incubated at Tuskegee University,” Cooper said. “They can see that our students are prepared, engaged and serious about these career discussions.”
E’Lecia Johnson and Donnisia Tibbs of the Missile and Space Intelligence Center in Huntsville, Alabama agreed.
“It’s great to see how curious they are and how excited and prepared they are to discuss space intelligence and what we do,” said Johnson.
Tibbs said the military defense organization seeks candidates with superior technical skills but that leadership chops and the ability to communicate effectively are just as important.
“We’re looking for people who can bring that to the role because they will be presenting information to others all the time,” she said.
Beyond making connections with employers, students also gained confidence by stepping outside their comfort zones.
While taking a brief break from the bustling arena floor, Autumn Smith, an aerospace engineering major from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Ca’Reena Tolbert, a construction science management major from Madison, Alabama, reflected on their experiences.
“Walking up to the tables and starting the conversation is the hard part,” Smith said. “But after that moment, it’s great. It’s making me more comfortable doing it.”
Both students attended the fair with résumés in hand and had taken advantage of Olive, the university’s newly introduced résumé-building tool available to all students.
“It is a good starting point and helps you see what to add or remove,” Tolbert said.
The Career and Leadership Development Center hosts more than 30 employability essential skills activations each year and is also the home of The Golden Tiger Career Closet.
