Ouch! Career politician Greg Abbott has spent years proving he will do just about anything to stay in Donald Trump’s good graces. Abbott has fully embraced Trump’s deeply unpopular agenda, lined his pockets by cozying up to billionaires and big corporations, and used Texas as a testing ground for the most extreme parts of the MAGA playbook.
And the reward? Apparently, not even a primetime speaking slot in his home state.
During Trump’s corruption carnival in Dallas this week, while younger, more prominent MAGA voices are rewarded with coveted primetime addresses, Greg Abbott has been sidelined to a supporting actor, scheduled to speak in the afternoon on the last day and failing to earn a starring role in Trump’s show.
That’s got to hurt. It’s no wonder high-profile Republicans are predicting Abbott could lose in November as new polling shows he’s underwater by double digits with key voting groups.
But after 30 years in public office, this is what everyday Texans have come to expect from Greg Abbott. They understand he cares more about having any seat at the billionaire ball than he does about having one around their kitchen table.
“Poor Greg Abbott should be embarrassed. Republicans from across the country have descended on his home state for a first-ever midterm convention – and he can’t even land a primetime speaking slot. It’s because even the swampiest MAGA faithful know that after 30 years in public office, Greg Abbott is old news. He’s had decades to make a difference and bring costs down for working people. Instead, on his watch, everything from gas and groceries to healthcare and housing is more expensive – and the only people getting ahead are the billionaires funding his campaign. That’s why he’s in the political fight of his life, with eight recent polls showing his lead has evaporated the closer we get to Election Day. Texans have lived Greg Abbott’s record. They’re tired of a status quo that’s not working for them – and they’re ready for change,” said Texas Democratic Party Spokesman Jacob Long.
