FORT WORTH, TX – June 26 serves as a reminder of the devastating record-breaking summer heat wave of 1980, one of the most memorable periods of extreme heat in Texas history. The anniversary offers an opportunity to reflect on how dangerous prolonged heat can be, especially for seniors and individuals living with chronic medical conditions.
Although temperatures have not reached those historic levels so far this summer, the combination of heat and humidity can still become unbearable and potentially dangerous for vulnerable residents.

For the past 10 years, Darryl Washington, President of The Washington International All-Purpose Foundation, has worked to help protect local families by providing and installing window unit air conditioners in homes across the city of Fort Worth
Each summer, the Foundation installs more than 50 air conditioning units for families and individuals in need, offering relief, comfort, and in many cases helping residents remain safely in their homes during periods of extreme heat.
This effort is supported by the Fort Worth Police and Fire Department, who assist with installations and work to ensure each air conditioning unit is safely installed, operating properly, and delivered to residents who need relief from the summer heat.
The next installation will take place on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at 11:00am at 1109 East Morningside Drive, Fort Worth, TX 76104 to benefit an elderly woman, highlighting the critical need for cooling resources among elderly and medically vulnerable residents.

Community members, businesses, and sponsors interested in helping purchase additional air conditioning units for families in need are encouraged to support the initiative.
