A winter storm slammed North Texas on Saturday, bringing sleet, ice, snow and bitter cold. On Saturday as the storm blew into Dallas-Fort Worth, school districts quickly canceled Monday classes.

Conditions have continued to worsen. Numerous flights have been canceled and motor vehicle accidents are piling up.

Highs were forecast to remain in the 20s, with lows in the teens and single digits through Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office, with an overnight low of 8 degrees expected. The temperature is not expected to rise above freezing until about noon Tuesday.

Sunday night is expected to be the coldest night across North and Central Texas since at least January 2024 — and possibly since December 2022 or February 2021, according to the National Weather Service’s office in Fort Worth.

On Sunday afternoon, Dallas ISD, Fort Worth ISD and districts in Collin and Denton counties made the call to cancel classes on Tuesday.

Districts look at multiple factors when deciding whether to cancel school.

In Dallas ISD for example, school personnel drive through the streets near schools to assess road conditions, according to district policy.
