Superb Woman: Lauren Anderson

Lauren Anderson made history in 1990 when she became the first African American principal ballerina at Houston Ballet. Born and raised in Houston, Anderson trained at Houston Ballet Academy. Known for her incredible athleticism and emotive performances, she became a beloved figure in the ballet world, captivating audiences in classical roles such as Cleopatra, Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Since retiring from the stage in 2006, she has dedicated her life to community outreach and teaching, working to make ballet more accessible to young dancers of color. A recipient of the Texas Medal of Arts Award, Anderson travels widely to speak about perseverance, identity, and the power of arts education.
