Tributes pouring in for Pettis Norman

By Anthony Council

Pettis Norman, former Dallas Cowboys tight end, passed away yesterday. A trailblazer on and off the field, Norman was more than a celebrated NFL athlete; he was a civic leader, civil rights advocate, entrepreneur, and author.

Born the son of a sharecropper, Norman rose to prominence at Johnson C. Smith University before joining the Dallas Cowboys, where he played in multiple playoff games including the iconic Ice Bowl and Super Bowl V. Voted one of the team’s most popular players, he was known not just for his athleticism, but for his leadership and voice during a pivotal era in American history.

Beyond football, Norman broke barriers in banking as Dallas’ first African American banking officer and built a thriving business empire spanning real estate, fuel, restaurants, and more. During a time of intense racial and economic division in Dallas, he became a unifier using his platform and entrepreneurial influence to mend divides and bring leaders together across lines of race and class. His founding of the Dallas Together Forum became a model for inclusive economic development replicated nationwide.

Norman was a philanthropist along with his beloved wife, Ivette, bringing warmth and inspiration wherever he went.

His legacy lives on through his family, his business endeavors, his autobiography The Pettis Norman Story, and the countless lives he touched through service and faith.

As Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach shared:

“Looking back, everyone really respected Pettis. He was a really good football player… Pettis is someone who has been a positive force in trying to continue to overcome discrimination… I’ve always had respect for the way he handles things.”

“I am deeply saddened to hear of Pettis’ passing. He was a dear friend and role model. The consummate gentleman, a fierce gridiron competitor, businessman, political leader, and Civil Rights Leader. I cherish his wisdom, the books he gave me, and the path he set for us to follow. May he Rest in Peace.”
