New Amsterdam’s Freema Agyeman Speaks out on Representation

NBC’s hit show New Amsterdam recently made the cover of Emmy magazine. The doctor show that debuted in 2018 is based on the book, Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer. Actress Freema Agyeman, who is Iranian and Ghanaian, is the only woman of color who plays a lead role on the show. When the news broke that the show made the front of Emmy magazine. Agyeman went to Instagram, proud of this accomplishment.

“Representation in mainstream matters. Because you can live next door to someone of a different race, religion, sexuality, ethnicity, ability, total flippin’ LIFE STORY and you may never get into a dialogue with them about what their journey and/or life experience is like.”
