Traction alopecia is a type of hair loss that can happen when your hair is pulled or placed under too much tension over time. It’s more common in the Black community and can be linked to hairstyles such as tight braids, twists, sew-ins, glued wigs, ponytails and buns.

One of the first signs may be a thinning or receding hairline, but hair loss can also happen in other areas of the scalp. The good news is that when caught early, traction alopecia may be reversible. However, continued pulling and tension can eventually damage the hair follicles and lead to permanent hair loss.

The sooner you address hair loss, the better. Dermatologist Victoria Barbosa explains treatments that may help reduce inflammation and encourage hair regrowth.
