McGlauthon Fleming IV

McGlauthon Fleming IV, or “Mac,” has always been passionate about writing, but it wasn’t until high school where he discovered his love for journalistic writing.

Now, a rising Junior at the University of North Texas, this passion has transferred into choosing the major Print and Digital Journalism. Through his writing Mac likes the “idea of helping other people’s truth come to light,” showing off his warm and welcoming character.

His school mentor, Dr. Dorothy Bland, suggested he apply to work under veteran journalist Cheryl Smith at Texas Metro News and he has learned much about journalism since starting. Mac’s main goal is to gain the real-life experience of working for a newspaper.

Through working on his speed and ability to turn out quality work daily, Mac is working on excelling in the journalism field. Additionally, Mac said his networking skills have greatly increased as he has perfected holding conversations and introducing himself to new people.

The biggest thing Mac has learned so far from this experience is to be flexible. Getting familiar with multiple areas of the journalism field and learning to “do it all because that’s the nature of how newsrooms are becoming.”

As he works hard to refine soft skills and learns to turn stories over each day, Mac is reminded of the reason behind it all. He loves writing scripts, novels, and other things of that nature, but he will always stick with journalism.

Being a journalist is what Mac wants to be because he likes “the idea of helping people with words and helping other people use their words to help themselves.”  Alex Lattanzio is a student journalist and high school intern at Texas Metro News.
