Today, the Dallas City Council took another major step toward doing right by our taxpayers when it comes to the future of City Hall by authorizing the City Manager to enter into negotiations in connection with up to four new City Hall locations.
As I have said from the beginning, making the right decision on this important matter requires facts. Multiple outside experts have publicly briefed the council on the costs of renovation, and the council has been briefed in executive session on relocation options and the associated costs. We already know that relocation would be far more affordable than renovation.
Last week, a near supermajority of the City Council wisely chose not to pour what likely would have been over a billion taxpayer dollars into an obsolete building. Now, as a result of today’s vote, the City Council will be receiving even more details in connection with our relocation options in order to better understand what our future City Hall could be.
After this information is brought back, I trust that the City Council will again make the right decision by our taxpayers and choose a municipal headquarters that functions effectively for employees and serves residents at the high standard they deserve.
In addition to being the most fiscally responsible decision, relocation presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine 1500 Marilla Street as something that unlocks new economic potential in Downtown Dallas. As our city welcomes World Cup visitors, we are getting a taste of how energetic Downtown Dallas can be, but we are also seeing the limitations of its current state. The decisions we make now can help us rejuvenate our urban core and create a more vibrant downtown that serves Dallasites for decades to come.
