“I write songs for people to sing,” gospel artist Kurt Carr said in an interview with Texas Metro News during a tribute dinner in his honor on June 15, 2026 at the Golf Club of Dallas. “I want everyone to sing the songs because it gets in their spirits and it helps them and encourages them, more so than just hearing me and being mesmerized by the gift of a singer.”
The private VIP dinner was part of a series of Project Unity’s Together We Sing events, culminating with a tribute concert on Wednesday, June 17 at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Texas. Now in its sixth year and fitting for Black Music Month, this annual concert blends gospel music and classical performance, always saluting an artist whose legacy has a profound impact on the industry.
Many showed up to celebrate Carr during the dinner curated by Together We Sing producer, Toska Medlock Lee. It featured an opening and closing prayer, dinner, entertainment by the Herbert Johnson Trio, presentations by officials and a conversation with Carr moderated by Project Unity founder, Richie Butler.
Other activities include a Together We awards program which will honor individuals and organizations, including former Dallas Mavericks CEO, Cynt Marshall, as this year’s Trailblazer Award recipient.
The Together We Sing musical tribute will feature artist performances, including Carr himself, the Unity Orchestra and a 200-voice Unity Choir. As in past years, it has proven to be an uplifting experience. Gospel music can play a part in reuniting in today’s climate of deception and division.
“Well, it provides hope,” Carr said. “It’s so much division in this country, like never before, and in the world like never before, and so our only hope is unity in God, because where there’s unity, there’s strength.”
