FRISCO, Texas – Sanaa Carter of North Carolina Central won the Black College Golf Coaches Association HBCU Freshman Women’s Golfer of the Year award on Thursday, May 28. In addition to winning the top freshman award, Carter was selected to the HBCU Women’s All-America and All-Freshman teams.

Carter now has five postseason awards since completing a standout debut season. The freshman sensation finished no lower than third in three events, including runner-up in the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship earlier this month. Her finish was the highest of any NCCU Division I golfer in the prestigious event.

In April, the Eagles placed third in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Women’s Championship which set a program record. Carter finished sixth to earn All-NEC Tournament honors, and she later was named to the all-conference team.

A Jacksonville, N.C., native, Carter immediately impacted the Eagles’ golf team as a first-year player. Her scoring average of 76.8 led the squad and ranked the best among freshmen in the NEC, where NCCU is an associate member.

Carter recorded five top-10 finishes in 10 matches in the 2025-26 season, including third in both the SAS HBCU Invitational and Thomas W. Dortch Jr. HBCU Invitational. She placed eighth in the UNCG Collegiate.

The Black College Golf Coaches Association and the Women’s Golf Coaches Association presented the BCGCA HBCU Women’s Golf Awards.
