This Day is History – May 12

On May 12, 1967, H “Rap” Brown replaced Stokely Carmichael as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. As SNCC’s new chair, Brown was meant to reduce the controversy surrounding the group. Brown, however, encouraged militancy among urban blacks, and soon, a federal campaign against Black militancy severely damaged SNCC’s ability to sustain its organizing efforts.
