“Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity.” – Comedian George Carlin

George Dennis Patrick Carlin is tied for first on my favorite list.

Comedy is a byproduct, but Carlin and Dave Chappelle are in a dead heat for their social commentary in my book. Chris Rock is close by.

No one can begin to imagine what George would have barked about Donald Trump and the menagerie of misery he is spreading across the globe. Carlin died in 2008, just a few short months before the first-ever Black president was elected.

Carlin was a huge figure in the comedy world and would have easily held the crown for “greatest” had he not been a devout and vociferous atheist. His atheism cost him financially and in standing, but he was a man rooted in his beliefs, and most respected him for that.

George, whose comedic sarcasm and engaging stage play were phenomenal, wrote jokes that made us think. He posed the question, if a man is declared the heavyweight champion of the world, what’s all the fighting about? If you don’t get that, don’t worry. IYKYK

Let me give you just a couple of his classics.

“Some people see things that are and ask, ‘Why?’

Some people dream of things that never were and ask, ‘Why not?’ Some people have to go to work and don’t have time for all that.”

“I’m completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. These two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.”

See what I mean? Carlin is brilliance personified. In his own way, he summed up American life in small sound bites. Any careful read of his decades of work also shows he predicted MAGA and shouted the warning early on.

Carlin warned that far too many Americans were fat, dumb, happy, and redneck. He foretold of a people whose blind allegiance to White patriotism, combined with a profound ignorance of our political system would lead us to the point where we are today. He also talked about war.

“Can’t educate our young people, can’t get health care to our old people, but we can bomb the shit out of your country all right! Huh? Especially if your country is full of brown people—oh we like that don’t we?

That’s our hobby! That’s our new job in the world: bombing brown people. Iraq, Panama, Grenada, Libya, you got some brown people in your country, tell them to watch the f out or we’ll goddamn bomb them!”

He didn’t mention, Iran, Cuba or Venezuela, but the mantra is self-evident and well-founded. America will drop “Bombs over Baghdad” and Outkast pointed it out in a song. But they will never take strategic action against White nations of the world, no matter how sinister they are. You know, like…Russia!

“Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity” became popular as Carlin spoke out against the Vietnam War in 1969. His quip succinctly highlights the contradiction and hypocrisy of using violence to end violence.

This kind of absurdity is what leaders like Ronald Reagan (“Peace through Strength”) and the present warmongering administration use to persuade the public that war is necessary.

No one wishes more than I do that George Carlin were here today to offer commentary on the worst president and administration in the history of this nation. Carlin also once said, “There’s a humorous side to every situation. The challenge is to find it.

Well, America is being screwed right now by the dumbest commander in chief in history.

Finding a reason to laugh about it gets more far-fetched every day.

We’re screwed!
