The day was sunny and the temperature was below freezing, however, it did not stop attendees from making their way to the Campus Theater in Denton, Texas to view Beyond the Headlines: The NABJ Journey during its run at the Denton Black Film Festival on the last day of the month, Jan. 31, 2026.

The National Association of Black Journalists documentary detailing its 50 years of existence was followed by a screening of Belonging Beyond Brown, a clear view of education gains or lack thereof before and after the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling in 1954.

Both films well documented the relentless pursuit of truth, showcasing the cyclical narratives of oppression that are repeating themselves before our eyes.

At the conclusion of this film block, a  live talkback took place featuring NABJ Founder Norma Adams-Wade interviewed by University of North Texas (UNT) NABJ President McGlauthon Fleming, IV. Fleming is a sophomore digital/print major. They were joined by Belonging Beyond Brown Producer/Director Dr. Nina Gilbert.

Adams-Wade was presented with “flowers while she’s living” in appreciation for the efforts of her and the 43 others who founded NABJ.
