CHICAGO, IL — Joseph Caldwell Sr., pioneering business owner of TailoRite Cleaners and revered community leader, passed away at the age of 92 on October 14, 2025. A fixture of Chicago’s South Side for nearly seven decades, he provided tailoring services for prominent figures including Rev. Jesse Jackson, former U.S. Senator Roland Burris, Mayor Brandon Johnson, and Mayor Harold Washington—alongside generations of Chicagoans who relied on his craftsmanship.
Since founding Tailorite in 1956, Mr. Caldwell Sr. built more than a successful tailoring and dry-cleaning business— he built a legacy of excellence, opportunity, and pride for generations of South Side residents. Under his leadership, TailoRite became one of the first Black-owned businesses to service professional baseball uniforms, maintaining the Chicago White Sox jerseys for nearly 30 years. He even threw out the first pitch on May 2, 2022. Other notable clients included the Chicago Bulls, United Airlines, Netflix, numerous churches, and professional organizations. His meticulous craftsmanship and unwavering commitment to quality made TailoRite a trusted name throughout the region and fashion circles worldwide, including a feature in Vogue magazine this past April.
Throughout his life, Mr. Caldwell Sr. remained devoted to his South Side roots—employing and mentoring local residents while giving back to civic and faith-based initiatives. His influence extended far beyond his storefront, inspiring generations of entrepreneurs and leaving an enduring mark on Chicago’s business and cultural landscape.
Mr. Caldwell Sr. is survived by his wife, Barbara Caldwell; their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and the many employees, clients, and community members whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in his honor has been established through the Chatham Business Association, where Mr. Caldwell was a founding member. The fund will provide succession planning grants for Black-owned businesses.
